Join Theseus over 2500 years ago as he travels through Ancient Greece discovering a life rich in sport, religion and art. The gods watch over Theseus in his quest to find his father. Through the people he meets and the places he visits, we learn of Ancient Greece and the legacies passed down to the present day; Olympics, Music, Theatre and Art.
This exciting piece of physical theatre uses Mime, Music, Storytelling and audience role-play to arrive at the climax as Theseus enters the Labyrinth and comes face to face with the Minotaur, a creature half man, half bull.
“The children gained a tremendous amount of information and facts to help them with their understanding of the topic of Ancient Greece.” Guildford Sch
"One thing that would have not been any where near as successful without your visit is our PE dance unit based on the Olympic Games. The children's work is exceptional and it is purely because of the techniques and ideas they learnt in the workshops. Their dance has poise and different levels. They extend theirshapes and really think about the story they are telling.
For the first time too we have children using the whole of their bodies including their faces to tell the stories in the dance. We still see 'sailing boat' moves and 'minotaur fighting' sword thrusts! Their dance has grace and eloquence which would not have happened without your visit."
Head of Year 5 - St.Margaret's Junior School
The play begins with two American tourists on their travels. They take the audience on a journey from London, through major European Countries/cities in order to arrive in modern Greece. In Athens, they visit the Acropolis and are fascinated by the old looking vases with figures on them. The figures on the imaginary vases come alive and the audience travel back in time to the year 500BC.
The audience become the Greek citizens, women and slaves of ancient Athens sitting on hard rock seating cut out of the hillside. They meet Zeus and Athene who introduce the role of the theatre in Ancient Greek society. Zeus explores the difference between comedy and tragedy in plays and the role of the chorus is explained. As part of the celebration of the festival of plays in honour of Dionysus, the children enjoy the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, while still experiencing everyday Ancient Greek life and other Ancient Greek mythological characters. The Minotaur is slay and the story ends. The audience return to Zeus and Athene, everyone participates in one last final song.
WORKSHOPS
An afternoon History/Drama workshop is the perfect accompaniment to a morning performance. Lasting the full afternoon and able to involve all the children studying the topic, workshops are fun, educational and capture the role-playing enthusiasm of the show.
•We begin with a Q&A session about the show. Expanding on the Legend Theatre actors, company and the history in the storyline, fact or fiction.
•The children are soon up and moving around observing and learning some of the drama and theatre techniques seen in the show. Mime, voice, action-reaction and sound effects. Working solo, paired and in groups.
•The final part of the workshop gives a chance for anything previously made by the class, costumes, props etc to be used in role-play. These props are combined with the companies to bring a period scene to life. Weather it’s a Tudor street scene, Ancient Greek Agora or a Viking settlement the afternoon peaks with the actors returning in character to interact with the groups scenes.
•The cost of a workshop would be £115 ( total for full day including show £315) Additional transport costs may be added depending on location.
